General OpenAmeos FAQ

What is OpenAmeos ?
OpenAmeos is the open source version of the Ameos UML modeling product. In early 2007, Aonix released the Ameos source code to the public. The first binary version to be published as OpenSource was OpenAmeos 9.2 which is equivalent to Ameos 9.1.7 minus the license manager.

How is OpenAmeos maintained ?
OpenAmeos is maintained by ScopeSET which was established in 2006 by former Aonix employees who were key architects of the Ameos product. ScopeSET maintains the technical infrastructure to provide binary distributions (see below) and general product support. For details, please visit scopeforge.de

Existing Ameos customers as well as the general community are however encouraged to provide customizations or extensions to the product. ScopeSET acts as an integrator in order to maintain the stability and integrity of the code base.

What are the future plans for OpenAmeos ?
Please check the OpenAmeos roadmap on scopeforge.de

As Ameos license owner, how am I affected ?
As existing Ameos customer, you can convert your Ameos installation to an OpenAmeos installation at your discretion. ScopeSET seamlessly provides support and maintenance as soon as you transfer your existing maintenance contract into an OpenAmeos maintenance subscription.

What is the license model for OpenAmeos ?
OpenAmeos is licensed under a modified version of the Lesser Gnu Public License (LGPL). The modification primarily concerns the existing Ameos (previously commercial) license holders/customer.

Am I obliged to provide code generated with OpenAmeos as OpenSource, too ?
Under no circumstances are you obliged to distribute code which is generated with Ameos as OpenSource code.

Am I obliged to provide changes to the OpenAmeos code as OpenSource code ?
As owner of Ameos you are not, but you are encouraged to do so. As new user of OpenAmeos you are as soon as you intend to distribute the source code to others.

How can I get new OpenAmeos binary distributions ?
ScopeSET will continue to provide OpenAmeos versions as regular binary distributions (approx. in a 6 month cycle) for any customers with a maintenance subscription. These distributions will include bug-fixes as well as enhancements and product evolutions (such as an integration with an OpenSource RDBMS). Any change to the source code, either provided by the community or by ScopeSET will be tracked, tested and release noted.
Public binary distributions will be provided less frequently and will generally lag behind ~ 6 months in terms of current functionality in the source code.

Where can I get support ?
Installation support is provided free of charge by ScopeSET via email. Any support beyond installation is provided by ScopeSET based on a maintenance contract. For more information, please contact sales at www.scopeset.de
